And why now?
Here’s what I’m thinking. I’ve been at this work for three decades. Way longer than I want to admit! And I’ve learned a lot from a host of wonderfully smart, creative people in a lot of incredible organizations. One of the things I’ve learned is that there’s a need. A need for that rare balance between mission and passion, and an entrepreneurial, business mindset. And now more than ever, people are striving to find that balance.
In the private sector, folks sometimes tell me they wish there was more organizational passion for the work. “How can we focus more on the people while we’re also focusing on revenues?” In the nonprofit sector, folks tell me they want to maintain their culture while adopting a more businesslike mindset. These concerns make me think of this oft-referenced quote: “Nonprofit is a tax status, not a business model.”
The truth is, it’s all possible. We just have to get out of our own way. Look at things with a new lens. Use our knowledge and insights in new ways. But organizations struggle to do this. Oftentimes, it takes a new partner, bringing in a new lens, to help us channel our history, ideas, resources and passion, and help us create that new version of our organization that will thrive in the next chapter of our service to our customers, clients and/or members.
